Frequently Asked Questions

Why not sharpen your own knives?

Domestic knife grinders, sharpening devices and steels never seem to give the results they promise. They tend to be aggressive and uneven and over time most will destroy your knives, ultimately doing more harm than good resulting in you having to replace them much sooner.
We all like to invest in the best knives we can afford. We love cooking and using sharp knives is a genuine joy. but no matter how much you pend on your knives, one thing is certain, they will require sharpening.
Chef Sharp exists so that everybody can have their knives sharpened professionally and regularly without it costing the earth.

What about whetstones?

Whetstones are excellent, but sharpening knives with whetstones requires practice, patience and skill. There is the cost of investing in good quality stones and the time required learning how use them. The whetstone sharpening process is time consuming and can be fairly messy until you get the hang of it. For most, maintaining knives with whetstones will simply be far too time consuming. They are brilliant for the enthusiast, but not a realistic solution for the vast majority.

How does it work?

Knives By Post: The vast majority of clients send us their knives via our convenient, age responsible, trackable and fully insured  “Safe Knives By Post” service.

This tailored service involves a quick “Over 18” proof of age check at point of delivery. It’s a simple little step, but one we whole heartedly embrace and a practice we adopted from day one as part of our industry leading “Keep Kids Safe!” policy.

We charge £15 for this service and whether you send us 5 knives or 50, the cost remains the same no matter where you live on the UK Mainland.

Drop-Off & Collect: If you live in the Bristol area you can drop off and collect your knives at Chef Sharp HQ. We are located in convenient, easy to find central location just off the A37 Wells Road above Totterdown. We are just outside the ULEZ zone so don’t worry about charges as we can easily be reached from all directions without passing through the Charging Zone.

WHAT DO WE SHARPEN: At Chef Sharp we specialise in knives that are used in the preparation of food. Simply put, this will include pretty much any knife or cleaver found in a professional kitchen or your kitchen at home.

We sharpen small knives, long knives, thin flexible knives, heavy deep knives and cleavers. Weather your knife be for meat, fish, vegetable or fruit, we most likely sharpen it.

The only knives we do not currently sharpen are serrated knives. This may change, but at present we do not offer the service.

We charge £9 per knife / cleaver regardless of size so all you need to do is select the knives and cleavers you want sharpened.

  • Get sharp with Chef Sharp

Our workshop is fitted with no expense spared Swedish built equipment. These systems run slow revolution, water cooled diamond and Japanese whetstone wheels. Each wheel expertly engineered to help us achieve perfect results every time. This equipment requires skill and experience to operate but allows our small but expert sharpening team to achieve the perfect sharpening angle and grind to suit each blade. This meticulous and highly skilled hand grinding technique ensures that your knives are treated with the utmost care and respect as they pass through our multi stage sharpening and finishing process.

At Chef Sharp we do not rely on automated machines. Instead, every stage of our sharpening process is carried out by our experienced hands. Sharpening knives is a precise craft and we understand the unique characteristics of each knife and will sharpen each blade accordingly.

There are no sparks in our workshop. We believe in the Japanese style wet grinding process. Our slow revolution abrasive stone and diamond wheels are water cooled and the blade edge is lubricated and kept cool at all times. This low impact sharpening method ensures we remove the bare minimum of steel from each blade prolonging the lifespan of your knives. The cold sharpening process transfers zero heat guaranteeing each blade retains its unique temper and strength. We finish the process by honing each blade on leather until perfection is achieved.

  • Getting your knives back

Your knives have now passed through the Chef Sharp knife sharpening process and are as sharp if not sharper than they were brand new. They are fit for purpose and ready for you to enjoy.

For protection we will clean each knife thoroughly and apply a small amount of mineral oil to the blade and any exposed metal. We will then wrap and package securely so that your knives are returned safely and in exactly the same condition they left us in.

Your knives will be returned to you via our brilliant UPS courier partner who as per the latest government requirement will ask for proof of age before handing over your now very sharp knives. This is a small security step in the big scheme of things and the service costs a little more. It is however the very best service available and as well as being a legal requirement, it guarentees not only the safe transportation and delivery of your knives, but the knowledge and peace of mind that we are all doing our bit to make sure sharp knives do not fall into the wrong hands.
